Filter or Softener? They Do Different Jobs
People use these words like they mean the same thing. They don’t, and buying the wrong one is the most expensive mistake you can make (we know).
A filter handles taste and smell. If your water tastes like a swimming pool or smells like a pond, that’s a filter job. It pulls out chlorine, sediment, and all the yucky stuff water treatment plants put in there.
A softener handles the crust. It swaps out the hard minerals for a tiny bit of salt, which is why the white buildup stops.
If your complaint is how the water tastes, you want a filter. If your complaint is what the water is doing to your stuff, you want a softener.
Plenty of houses around here need both. That’s normal, and doing them at the same time costs less than doing them a year apart.
What Moves the Price
Two things: the gear and the getting-to-it.
The gear is like buying a truck. Base model does the job. Fancy model does more. A basic sediment filter and a full reverse osmosis setup are not in the same neighborhood price-wise.
Getting to your main line can oftentimes be challenging. If it’s right there and easy to reach, the job moves fast. If it’s tucked behind a wall or your crawl space has about fourteen inches of clearance, it takes longer. It’s still not a problem. We have small plumbers too.
Older homes can add a little too. If there’s a section of old galvanized pipe near where the system goes, that’s worth handling while we’re already in there.
